The pancreas is a central digestive organ, which produces the digestive juice together with the liver. This juice breaks food down into molecular components. In addition, it regulates the blood sugar level. Operations can play a central role in the case of diseases of the pancreas. These are frequently tumour diseases or inflammations.

Symptoms

In the case of inflammations of the pancreas, severe pains in the upper abdomen often lead to an emergency. Tumour diseases very often have unspecific symptoms. In some cases, the tumour can lead to a painless jaundice. This means that the white of the eyes turns yellow. Often, patients have observed unwanted weight loss and general feeling of weakness.

Diagnosis

In the case of diseases of the pancreas, alongside computer tomography, endosonography techniques are frequently used. This means that an ultrasound sensor is placed in the immediate vicinity of the pancreas via a gastroscopy. In the case of tumour diseases, therefore, the following important questions must be clarified:

  • Is it a benign or malignant tumour?

  • Is surgical removal of the tumour possible?

  • Should radiotherapy and chemotherapy be carried out?

Treatment

Pancreatic diseases, particularly tumour diseases are highly specialised medicine. Accordingly, treatment plans will be discussed and created interdisciplinarily with various specialists. The surgical removal of a pancreatic tumour can be a central component of this.
