The stomach is at the start of the digestive organs in the abdominal region. Diseases of the stomach can occur via inflammations, cancers or even displacement of the stomach into the chest area.

Symptoms

The symptoms of stomach diseases range from nausea, vomiting, feeling of pressure and burning pains in the stomach area, right up to loss of appetite and weight loss. They can also be the cause of anaemia, and in rare cases also vomiting blood or excretion of black stools.

Diagnosis

The most important examinations for diseases of the stomach include gastroscopy and computer tomography. Often, inflammations of the stomach mucosa are the cause of complaints. In the case of cancers, the question is what type of cancer it is, and how far it has already spread.

However, diaphragmatic hernias can also be the cause of complaints in the stomach region. The diaphragm separates the chest region from the stomach region. In the case of diaphragmatic hernias, the stomach can shift in the direction of the chest area and cause problems.

Treatment

Depending on the extent of a diaphragmatic hernia, an operation can achieve lasting relief from the complaint. The position of the stomach in the abdominal region is corrected laparoscopically (keyhole surgery) and the entrance to the diaphragm is reinforced.

In the case of cancers, treatment is carried out by various subject specialists as a rule. Depending on the type of cancer, the partial or complete removal of the stomach can be an important pillar of the treatment concept.
